Add Zing! to your Zummer.
Neon is often something associated with Summer. Or the 1980's. It's my belief, that because of the long and cold NYC winter and current weirdo Sprummer weather, adding neon to a daily look is needed right NOW! Last week at the nail salon, I contemplated the pale pink of a Ballet Slipper, but I busted out the Neon Orange instead, pledging this and other neon colors would be my constant companion through the warm seasons. On my way home, I came across this adorable animal print tote (pictured) with neon accents from Joe Boxer for less than $10. And of course, no neon look is complete without colorful sunglasses. All three neon picks are easy to pair with black and other neutral colors for zing and zip. And I promise, the neon hue feels like a party, uplifting moods and inspiring compliments aplenty.

it's the little things that matter
As girls, we love to play with little things. Barbie has her teeny hot pink pocketbook. Our dollhouse comes equipped with little hangers for littler black dresses. So, while at an event last week, I was especially excited to get the scoop on a new style collaboration for the little lovers in us. Spanish jewelry company Tous has partnered with our beloved shoe brand, Manolo Blahnik on a series of adorable and teeny, tiny silver and gold charms made to represent the ever popular Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane on a necklace chain. The presentation, pictured here, was even on tiny, little chairs. And one of the Tous representatives visiting from Spain, was rocking some small eyeglasses. I was dying over the cute. And took to the Internet to find more fun, little finds. With fascinators being all the Royal rage, I peeped this tiny hat that Alexa Chung rocked for the for New Look campaign. It's nice to know even as adults, fashion still allows us to play grown-up.

Livestrong with Jen Roop: $1 for 1 Mile
This is the third year that my friend, Jen Roop is participating in the LIVESTRONG Challenge. The 100 mile ride is on Sunday, July 10 in Davis, CA. She rides to raise money because she believes in a cure, and she believes that every dollar can make a difference. Her commitment to the cancer community is to raise as much money as she possibly can, which means riding a mile for every dollar she raises.

fashion mash-up

It's so totally awesome that spring is here, summer will follow and we get to break out our itty bitty sexy tees and mini's, tanks and kini's. It's time for backyard barbeque's and our favorite summer songs to dance away the sunsets to. I love a music mash-up, when a DJ blends together two songs to make one glorious tune. And when it comes to clothes, I can't get enough of a good fashion mash-up. Of which there are a ton this season. Robertson Ave. favorite Catherine Malandrino has paired up with preppy sportswear brand Lacoste for a 12 piece collection that rocks iconic tennis chic. Malandrino, a tennis player herself, adorns the sporty glam pieces which include slouchy harem pants, wide-leg trousers, pleated miniskirts, tie-dye polos with bat-wing sleeves, and collared crochet gowns that graze the floor with Lacoste's logo, the crocodile. Over in the home department, Italian luxury brand Missoni has paired up with budget friendly Target on everything from clothes to bed sheets to dinnerware to bikes, all in Missoni’s signature swirls, zigzags, and near-hallucinogenic florals. And already on the likes of fashion darlings Rachel Bilson and Rose Byrne is the Derek Lam collection for eBay. E-commerce genius. The designer designed an assortment of iconic dress styles he envisions for every woman's wardrobe and you can bet they are selling out quickly. Will you bid on it?

The Indie "IT" Bag and Emerging Bag Trends

I had the honor of sitting on the pre-judging panel of the Indie Handbag Designer Awards this past weekend. 800 contestants, 8 categories and a whole bunch of creative, cool and relatively kooky submissions. Being somewhat of a bag lady myself, I have really honed in over the years on what my aesthetic is: classic, timeless and structured. If I'm going trendy, it's a Tory Burch Robinson Tote and mini. If it's a major statement I am making, it's the Hermes Birkin. So going into the competition, I knew what I would like and what I wouldn't. Some trends absolutely emerged from the many submissions. Orange is the "it" color and the all natural, cork is a fast rising star. Staying true to my personal bag style, I thoroughly enjoyed the Fiona cork baguette from Jess Rizzuti. And my overall favorite was a satchel-y, structured leather tote with a cotton, eco-accent body and leather tassel from Indigo Blue. I finished the day knowing that cork is an absolute fashion MUST-HAVE moving forward this Spring and Summer, so keep an eye out ladies, for a fab and Earth-friendly cork purchase.

what time is it?

One of my earliest childhood style memories was when I was given a Swatch Watch on my 9th birthday. Swatch had just recently issued a series of smelly watches and the semi-see through jelly band was scratch and sniff, so that, not only did I look super cool, my wrist smelled of sweet strawberries. The better to intoxicate the 5th grade boys with... And then came Pop Swatch, a pop art watch face that you could attach to clothing. What would Miuccia have to say about that? Through the years, the style of the Swatch watch has grown up to include quite a mature timepiece while keeping the casual ethos of the original "second watch" vibe. Recently, on a trip down memory lane, I popped into the Swatch store in Soho to check out what the brand is up to. What I found were sherbert colored pieces that doubly wrap around the wrist, appropriately entitled 'The Lady Collection". So fun. So chic. So SWATCH. I picked up a fab olive strap that goes great with Michael Kors oversized mens gold piece. Two watches together!? Oh yes, ladies! That's what time it is!!

the weight loss of OZ
I've got a new Glamour post on bathing suits up now that you can read here. To best fit into my bathing suit, there are a few 'get thin quick schemes', I'm not willing to do anything illegal or stupid. So, I wrote a quick email to my friend Dr. Oz Garcia, not to be confused with THE Dr. Oz, but who, with three best selling books, is equally sexy and qualified. I wanted to know what I could do in the next day, week, month to get bikini ready without having to get on the Stairmaster from now until then. According to Oz, losing weight quickly, but healthily means increasing your intake of healthy foods, avoiding the guilty pleasures and getting more exercise in than usual, which is what I suspected. He also suggests avoiding salt to reduce bloat, drop carbs and to stay hydrated and rested, allowing the body to run at optimal health. Easy enough. I'm in.

go FAB yourself!
Fabulous on a Budget is the lifestyle manifesto for living la dolce vita on a dime. Leah and Mary initiated this concept back in 2004 while lounging poolside at The Ritz. As the girls survived on student salaries, they still managed to indulge in weekly manicures, a healthy dose of heels, and beach side residence. As everyone wanted to learn how, the duo set up shop to do just that, proclaiming to the world, “Everyone can be Fabulous!” Check out my new Glamour post and their adorable, limited edition tee with proceeds benefiting Japan, here.

liv loves denim!

my new glamour post, up here now, covers the behind the scenes happenings at the opening of stella mccartney at the flagship saks fifth ave. in nyc. hosted by the lovely liv tyler, I had the opportunity to ask both ladies what their favorite looks of the Spring are. and if u know your fashion, stella is doing a lot of denim this season. and liv loves the looks. I asked her, besides the denim, what is her favorite trend? fashion conscious liv admitted she doesn't follow trends and just loves what she wears any time, any day. she did give a nod to the comfy romper... and to her favorite stella mccartney little black dress that hangs in the closet from over a decade ago when she met stella at kate's house. kate moss, of course.

my american road trip

I was asked by banana republic to interpret the great american road trip as part of their "journey in style" campaign. seeing as how new yorkers transport via subways and yellow taxi cabs in collective morning commute, my perspective of a road trip is different then say, campers in north dakota.

Do you LOVE*deep?

Like Ghandi fasts for his cause, in the name of The Urban Grocer, I'm starting up the NYC fave, spiritual juice cleanse, Love Deep by Organic Avenue. Tomorrow. LOVE*deep is a 5-day deep dive into pure liquid nourishment. So, yes, no food. For a foodie. what to wear when hosting a food show in buenos aires

I've got a fun, #foodie flavored post up on glamour.com today. you can read it (and share it with friends), here:
http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2011/04/yp-behold-the-hamburger-dress-foo.html
with all this talk of global foodies and Urban Grocer premieres happening this Sunday night, April 10 at 8pm on the Cooking Channel, I wanted to shine some light on the style side of things. as Producer of the show, I also held the title of show stylist, hair and make-up artist. being a food network junkie, I take notice of what the women hosts wear. lots of three quarter, non offensive, scoop neck tees and jeans. fair enough. but I'm a stylist first and foremost and if I'm styling a show, I'm making a statement! make sure to check out our trip to buenos aires where I play off the very funky and urban south american city vibe with nieves lavi animal print jumpers, effortless scarves, slouchy boho over the shoulder bags and handmade from italy, gold and leather sandals from tuccia di capri. the city is alive and vibrant with a very specific street chic. and I wanted to style the host, caitlin, to reflect. make sure to tune in and let me know what you think of my cooking channel style.

a hollywood love story

Original post on The Urban Grocer here: Food, Travel & TV: Shannon Keenan Demers
What better way to share an Urban Grocer piece, then on the birthday of the fabulous Ms. Shannon Keenan Demers. We love you so much... Like all great Hollywood stories, I first met Shannon Keenan Demers poolside at a Los Angeles hotel. With an impressive resume chock full of food and travel television production – and as co-owner of 2Tall Productions with her husband Mike Demers – she’s spent her career as a producer trekking across continents. From working as a Series Producer on Bizarre Foods to serving as an Executive Producer and Showrunner on our very own The Urban Grocer, I chatted it up with Shannon about her life in travel, food, and television from behind the camera. And because Shannon has as much experience as she is tall (which is very), we’re running this interview in two-parts. So stay tuned; this is “to be continued…”
The Urban Grocer: While working on Bizarre Foods, what were your most memorable experiences?
Shannon Keenan Demers: I could go on for days about the amazing experiences my husband, Mike Demers, and I had on Bizarre Foods. Mike was the cameraman and I was the producer and most of the time, it was just the two of us and Andrew Zimmern, the host. We spent time in remote South America jungle lodges we could only access by taking a hollowed out canoe over a black lake filled with piranhas. We spent two days riding around the Moroccan desert in 100 degree heat with a dead goat in the back of our van that was meant to be a gift for someone hosting us deep in the Atlas Mountains. We spent a scary day locked in a room with a witch doctor performing a cleansing ceremony with homemade hooch, open flame and live guinea pigs. We ate haggis in Scotland, balut in the Philippines, and fresh iguana in Trinidad. And when I say “we,” I guess I should clarify – I mostly took pictures….
TUG: What do you think is important about food and travel on television?
SKD: I think shows like ours – like The Urban Grocer – are so important because they really inspire people to try new things and visit places they might never have considered before. And you don’t have to be a hard core foodie or a seasoned traveler to get lost in the stories we’re telling – you just have to sit back and enjoy the journey!
TUG: You have been such a significant part of The Urban Grocer television special. What aspect of the show excites you most?
SKD: What I’m most excited about is that we finally get to share our amazing experience in Buenos Aires (BA) with the Cooking Channel audience! BA has such mad pride for it’s culinary scene – you could just see it on the faces of every single person we met while we were there – they just couldn’t wait to share their totally unique take on their local cuisine. That excitement spread quickly to our entire crew, each and every one of whom worked tirelessly to execute the exact vision that we set out to capture from the start. I couldn’t be prouder of everyone that was part of our BA family.
Wanna know more about Shannon’s experience working in travel and food television production? Watch this space for Part II of our interview, set to run on Thursday, 7 April.
And of course, check out Shannon’s great work as Executive Producer on The Urban Grocer premiering on the Cooking Channel, April 10 at 8pm ET.

the urban grocer: television edition

I've been starting to spread the word on the new cooking channel special, airing april 10 at 8pm that I produced, along with two tall productions and starring my smarty pants lil sister, caitlin. and since I'll be chatting about it up until it airs, I wanted to give you the exclusive scoop on the who, what and where. my sister caitlin started up the urban grocer a little over a year ago from her room in centro america where she had little to watch on television in english except for the food network. having a lifelong love and talent for food (and the food network), she wanted to create a place online where international foodies can gather, post and read up on all of the creative, fresh and fun foodtuffs that are out there. seeing as how she currently lives in geneva, switzerland and also has lived in mexico city, nicaragua, born and raised in new york, worked as a sous chef in boston and grad school in chicago, she has an expansive palette and global point of reference. the ingredients were mixed and the urban grocer was born. once it was picked up by some major peeps, the site was a hit heard around the world! over the summer, with an opportunity to head to LA on a getaway, we met with some production friends that really saw the potential of a television show. together we packaged and they pitched to the holy grail of food entertainment, the food network... and the food network bit! they loved how the urban grocer fit with their newest television endeavor, cooking channel, which offers young, fresh and fun shows that cater to the global foodie. just like the urban grocer. so, we were off to buenos aires to shoot the hour long special that you'll see April 10 at 8pm on the Cooking Channel. It was the trip of a lifetime and one of the best work experiences of my life. And that passion and love for food and travel shows in the show. My sister, who hosts The Urban Grocer is adorable and smart and navigates Buenos Aires like an adventurous ex-pat. We hope you'll join us. Click here for showtimes and if you wanna help spread the word - Cut, Paste and Retweet: Turn On Your TV! @theurbangrocer is On! - http://bit.ly/hKdJNg ...and see you on April 10th!! xJZ

I'm talking tresses on Tyra.com

is it cool to love my own advice? I did this piece with wendy rose gould several months back for tyra banks' typeF.com and when I saw it today, I thought the tips, like "you can save on at-home blow drys, pharmacy-chic hot-oil treatments and bulk shampoo and conditioners" and "Zaino also recommends Vaseline for a fly-away cure all" were so clever. ha. what's your favorite frugalista hair tip?

red hot

clearly, I love the color red. I spent much of my youth rocking the mac russian red lipstick shade, a blueish-red tint so matte you can caulk a tub with it. my shoshanna dress featured on the huffington post today, thanks to beautiful strangers, is a favorite dress of mine. It's paired with a tommy hillfiger Spring trench with prep school embellishments and steve madden heels. AND an incredibly chic pair of l'eggs profile tights which work better than Spanx (if u can belive it) and sell for less than $10 at the pharmacy. I was wearing a black stella mccartney prior to this, and producer jennifer goodkind suggested some more color. thank goodness you can't see the jack russell remnants of my sister's dog , taco in the photo by bruno gaget. that's movie magic for you.

elimination fashion?

I am obsesed with american idol this season. and even got my bfriend in on the action. while we do have DVR, we choose (or I choose and force him, ha.) to sit on the couch most wednesday and thursday nights to watch the top 12. I put my dibs on casey but do have a soft spot for that young blondie, lauren. too bad she was a freeking fashion disaster last night in a ruffled baby blue dress over jeans!?!? UGH. what was the show stylist thinking letting her go out there like that. I honestly believe she may get kicked off on her outfit choice alone. those kids these days... who's your pick to win?

chuck you

chuck taylor was was an American basketball player and shoe salesman/evangelist who stole the hearts of men and women alike with his brand of converse shoe. the converse all-star shoe, one of the first especially designed to be worn when playing basketball, was introduced in the 1910s. by 1923 chuck taylor's name was added to the patch, and the shoe became the infamous and iconic Chuck Taylor All-Stars.

sunglasses for your face shape

its a pretty easy rule of thumb when buying sunglasses that if you've got a round shape, square glasses like a ray-ban wayfarer is best and if you've got a square face, bring on the oversized circular shades. I've always been a purist when it comes to my sunglasses, rocking the ray-ban aviators in gold and silver. I have a collection that includes wayfarers, oversized chanels, embellished gold chanel aviator and even the heart shaped sunglasses you catch in my blog pic. those I got on the set of vh-1's glam god and have loved them ever since. eyewear is a very specific style choice for both men and women. and these twin girls, coco & breezy certainly know how to do it up. if you like what you see, click that link and 'like' it on the page and let me know what shades you are wearing at night?

what's red and red and red all over?

hot dang, ladies - work that color! my fave red dress of oscar evening was the valentino that anne hathaway wore. overall, I loved halle berry's nude and sparkley dress by marchesa with mila kunis in a lovely, lavendar elie saab coming in a close second. whose was your favorite?
